Canadian Afghanistan

Just a quick word to keep this blog on life support. The Canadian military involvement in Afghanistan has become increasingly controversial up here. People are asking whether we should be involved in one of Bush's pointless conflicts, what good we are doing, and what the military action is doing to Canada's reputation abroad.

My first reaction is that Afghanistan in the only 'good' conflict going right now. That country was - and is - the home base of the Taliban and al Qaeda. The Taliban and al Qaeda are the real enemy - the religious absolutists who plotted and executed the 9-11 attacks. Going after those guys is a slam dunk. You gotta, or else you're asking for more attacks.

The second question is more difficult to answer: what good are we doing? Like the Iraq debacle, it was not the attack itself that was an operational nightmare, it's been the occupation and reconstruction. We were welcomed (to the extent that we were welcomed) on the understanding that we would clean up after ourselves.

But the staggering incompetence of the Bush Junta has prevented reconstruction. They've not only cheaped out on soldiers for domestic security, they've failed to rebuild and refurbish. To the extent that money is spent, it's spent on security.

It's like there's a leak in the dam, but instead of fixing the leak, they've chosen to buy mops and buckets to haul away the water. Under the current circumstances, the water will never stop. We're just waiting for the dam to break, or the water-carriers to decide to stop carting the stuff away.

Canadian lives and treasure are being wasted on a non-solution to a problem that cries out for a real solution. And to answer the third question above, it hurts Canada's reputation as a premier peace-keeper to keep carrying water for the Bush Junta.

What's the solution? Canada has always had clout in the world community greater than the proportion of our military strength or population. We've been a moral leader for a strong peace, and that's what we need to advocate within a NATO-led Afghan mission.

Canada should lead to build international forces in that country to control it from border to border. Afghan PM Karzi has been called the "Mayor of Kabul" because that's all the central government really controls.

International forces need to fulfill the promise of the first incursion. In order to establish a fledgling democracy, there needs to be, well, order. And Canadian forces can be a if part of that. Second, there needs to be investment. The opium trade has hit an all-time high there - clearly, people need to be able to make money in legitimate pursuits, and they need to be safe from extremists to do it.

It's probably too late to do those things for Iraq. But can Canada lead an international effort to do right by Afghanistan? Probably, but it strikes me that PM Stephen Harper is about the last guy to do that. He's already called his opponents "anti-Israel" and is a George W. in waiting.

And if there is no serious international effort to save Afghanistan, why throw good lives and money after bad? Do Canadians need to bleed to satisfy Georgie's twisted vision of a rampant America?

I think not. I think that unless a real strategy for victory - security + investment - is implemented, Canada should bow out.

North Korea

So the NK's blew up a test nuke. Oh, good. So now we can put aside a few back-and forth claims about what they're up to and just focus on the fact that this is the greatest foreign policy failure for the US ever. Not that it solves anything to just name it - but maybe if enough voters get it through their heads, we can make some changes.

Though how we change out of this I really don't know. The most crazy despot on the planet - a guy who, by all accounts, is almost exactly the same person as the puppet that played him in Team America: World Police - has a working nuclear weapon. Stunning.

The story's been told better by better writers out there, but essentially the Junta took over a relationship with the NK's where they were not building a bomb, had shut down their bomb-making reactor, and the UN had cameras in the place. Fast forward six years of colossal bungling, and they're test-firing a nuke.

Does it matter what's gone on those six years? The bottom line is that a country that is bugs-on-garbage wild has a nuke and the means to make more.

Part of the problem is that a bunch of silver-spoon private school kids tried to play a bullies game. The W and Cheney crowd grew up with big money. There was no gang war, nobody got the turds beat out of them, nobody pulled a knife or a gun.

When I was in high school, I went from the Silver Spoon Academy to the local suburban middle-class school. It was a tough transition - not exactly the 'hood or anything even close, but a place with enough hard lessons for any private school kid to learn a bit. And what you learn first is that you don't talk what you can't bring.

If you want to take a kids lunch money, you better be prepared to go get it. In Silver Spoon Academy you might hide Biff's books, but that will get you a good talking-to.

So when the lah-dee-dah Junta started acting the tough guy, street psycho Kim was ready for them to bring it. Only it never got brought. Which just proved how inefficacious the Junta Nancies really are.

Now, with the military hopelessly mired in the unsolvable Iraqi mess, there's nothing to be done. Hell, even if our best and brightest hadn't been pointlessly squandered in Iraq, what would they do? Invade a country known to have nukes?

Hardly.

The best we can hope for now is a universal denunciation of NK which might bring cooler heads to the bargaining table.

The US is no longer part of any real solution - we haven't been for years. This is part of the proof.

I honestly never thought I'd live to see America brought so low.

Football

NFL - WEEK 5

Sunday, Oct. 8

INDIANAPOLIS 18½ Tennessee - Wow. What is this? Faber College at Ohio State on homecoming? Can Tennessee cover 18.5 against Indy in Indy? Hmmm. I never would have thought it would come to this. As recently as 2003 the Titans were a team to beat, and Payton Manning was co-MVP with the Titan's Steve McNair. Now look at the match-up. This is just humiliating.

But at the same time, it's an opportunity. I don't think last week's close call against the Jets was a fluke. Indy is not what it once was. And a smart coach like Jeff Fisher knows that. I think Fisher can keep his team from being humiliated.
Titans to cover - Indy to win

NY GIANTS 4½ Washington - The other Manning brother is showing signs, but the Giants were lucky to beat Philly, and this Washington team will be better every week. I guesBrunellss couldn't be much worse.
Washington

MINNESOTA 6½ Detroit - How do you lose in Buffalo and bfavoredred to beat anybody the next week? I guess the Bills are getting some respect around Vegas. Detroit put up some numbers on offense, and put down a few too many on defense in a 41-34 loss last week. There's a huge stone tablet in the desert just outside of Reno that says: "NEVER BET ON DETROIT ON THE ROAD." Believe it.
Minny

NEW ORLEANS 6 Tampa Bay - Oooh, the Bucs suck. They should bring back the tangerine uniforms with the gay pirate for this team. It's a total loss of swagger like I've never seen. And the Saints at home? That venue is the biggest home field advantage in the world right now.
Saints.

St. Louis 3 GREEN BAY - The Pack fans must bet a lot. That's the only explanation for the Rams on;y getting 3 here. That Pack team on Monday night was dreadful. And what's this about Favre not starting? After setting the record for QB starts? How can he do this, in what may be his last year (and is almost certainly his last year in Green Bay)? Can't they patch him up enough to trot out for the first series? Just keep handing off until you have to punt. Hey - after tanking it so Michael Strahan could get the sack record, he can't object to a sham in hhonorour.
Rams

NEW ENGLAND 9½ Miami - It's funny that Houston was the team to derail Miami, because they did it to the Fins back in '03 - another year when the Fish were supposed to win it all. The expansion Texans came into Joe Robbie Pro Player Whatever stadium game one and handed it to them. I love how the Dolphins are always Super Bowl champs - in March. If they could take all the wins they're given in the Spring, they'd be the 60's Packers all over again. Or the 00's Patriots.
Patriots

CHICAGO 10½ Buffalo - So much for Buffalo getting on a roll. This reallyrealy bad time for them to have to face a quality Bears team on the road. Of course, most weeks are a bad time for the Bills to face a quality team. But I believe - and this is because I talk to way too many Bills fans - that they can keep it close.
Bills to cover, Bears to win.

CAROLINA 8 Cleveland - Caroline does not deserve eight points over my Brownies. Wherefore art thou, Romeo? Upset special.
Browns to win, baby.

JACKSONVILLE 7 NY Jets - I'm liking Jax. They're going to have a season very much like last year - 12-4 and then crushed like a clown car in Baghdad in the playoffs.
Jax

Kansas City 3½ ARIZONA - KC is still playing without a QB, and making it work. But I think the Cards are due. Of course, they've been 'due' for the past eight decades.
Cards

SAN FRANCISCO 3½ Oakland - The Raiders are so bad they favoredavoured to win their own scrimmages.
49ers

PHILADELPHIA 2½ Dallas - Oh, it's tThe TOor theTO bowl. I'll bet the Tuna is sick of hearing that. Here's the thing: Philly has no running game. Even when they run, it's always a draw or misdirection, never a power shot up the gut. You can't win like that against a coach who can diagnose it.
Cowboys

SAN DIEGO 3½ Pittsburgh - I love watching the Steelers lose. They were the worst Super Bowl champs maybe ever. No - no maybe. They were the worst team to ever win a Super Bowl. It was a disgrace, and now they're paying the Karmic price.
Chargers

Monday, Oct. 9

DENVER 4 Baltimore - Baltimore goes to its Waterloo. That 4-0 record will look good on the mantle. Treasure it, because they're on the slide to 9-7 at this point.
